Potty Practice

I know what you're probably thinking because I've already heard it a few times before ... how does it go again? Training the parent, not the child ... or something like that. I've read a number of books on child care, development, and education. Some of these books I sought out, others were suggested to me and still others I found while looking for something else. This book falls into the 3rd category.

I first read J. Lekovic's book before Maryn was born. I don't remember what book I was looking for when I came across it on Amazon, but I was intrigued by the reviews and thought it might be a good book for later. I hadn't planned to read it right after it arrived, but I did.

I didn't notice the small chapter on toilet training children with special needs when I bought it, nor did I realize the significance it would later have as I sped through that part the first time. You see, my daughter will most likely have challenges growing up that many of her peers will not. Potty training may be more difficult for her, or it may not, but the author's thoughts and approach really resonated with me.
Lekovic discusses the history of potty training in this country and also looks at different approaches abroad. She believes the potty, like other tools used in daily hygiene routines (tooth brush, bath tub, hair brush) can be introduced early. Obviously I'm not expecting her to be able to control when she goes, or know that she needs to go until she is much older. Again, it's just a habit that will hopefully assist with the "training" process when she is ready.
We started putting Maryn on the potty when she was old enough to sit unsupported. She was little so I had to find a potty that was lower to the ground so it would be comfortable for her. I'd sit her on it at a time during the day when I knew she was likely to go and we'd read a little book or sing some songs or play some patty cake. She really enjoys it. At this point she would be able to get off the potty, but she has become accustomed to sitting on it for a few minutes at certain times of the day, and does not climb off. I no longer need to read with her while she sits there, although I try to. And big bonus ..it saves on diapers as Maryn almost always goes while sitting on it.
She does not do this at daycare at this point. We just practice when I'm home with her (T &Th) and on the weekend mornings.

What a World

There is nothing like coming to work and seeing news choppers over campus. I was prepared as I heard the news before leaving this morning, but became a little uneasy as I got closer and realized one was directly over my building. Just trying to keep some distance from the other chopper I suspect. As I'm sure you've heard NIU had another shooting early this morning ... apparently an isolated incident, but still shocking and sad. Sigh

Scraped up Little Tike

Here she is sporting her bandaid today after her sweet little face collided with the wood floor.
Originally I was worried that she may have cut her tongue or cheek with her newly emerged teeth, but apparently the floor was more dangerous than her teeth this time. She scraped off some skin on her chin. Poor kid.

She still gets around mostly by army crawl, but is able to support herself on her hands and knees. Today she was making more of an effort to move forward while in this position. She was successful for short distances, but eventually collapses onto her chest or forearms. She's making great progress. I'm so proud!

Jewl's All A Glow

This past weekend my littlest sis Jewl turned 11. The celebration included bowling, cake, lunch at Domo 77, and more cake. It's hard to believe so much time has gone by. She wasn't much older than Maryn is now when I moved home from Boston to help out and generally spend more time with her.

Happy 11 years to you, kido - I hope you had a fantastic birthday!

Miami of Ohio vs NIU

Maryn took in her first basketball game today watching her dad's Alma mater take on her mother's employer. It was a close game but the Redhawks walked away with the win.

Little Ryn opted out of stadium food in favor of some flavorful organic peaches. When we realized we didn't have a bib, Mike tied her footsie pj's around her neck to save the day as well as her white shirt.

Do you love the family snap shot Mike took as much as I do? Hilarious!

These shots were taken last week before her haircut.
