Maryn's body needs more calories than an average baby because she expends more energy breathing. But she eats less because the painful reflux makes eating a struggle. Her pediatrician has seen a number of kids with laryngomalacia (and the reflux that typically accompanies it) and indicated that weight gain is often a problem until the condition clears up. She had one patient who didn't start putting on weight until 8 months of age!
The decision didn't come easily and we're obviously anxious and worried about surgery for such a little girl. The GI reassured us ... saying he's done this procedure on babies over 100 times and has never had any complications.
Really, though ... it doesn't matter what anyone says ... we still worry.
